Learn How To Create A Garden Bench Using Left Over Blocks From Your Retaining Wall

When you create a retaining wall, there are often leftover concrete blocks and it can be hard to figure out how to use them. If you have a beautiful flower garden in your backyard that you would like to be able to enjoy more often, consider building a beautiful bench out of block walls in the garden to sit on while enjoying the sights and sounds of the garden. Creating a beautiful bench does not have to be overly difficult to do. The following guide walks you through the steps for creating unique and fun bench out of a few easy-to-use materials.

Level the Ground

The first thing you need to do before you start building your bench is level the ground. Use a shovel to loosen the soil where you want the bench to be located. Use a rake to spread the soil as evenly as you can. Place a level on the soil to make sure that it is level. Use the rake to move the soil again if it is not even.

Create the Cement

Read the bag of ready-mix concrete to determine how much water you need to add to it to create the grout for your bench. Mix the cement with water in a wheelbarrow. Use a hoe to mix the two together until they mix together to a creamy consistency.

Create the Base

Once the ground is level, you will be ready to create the base for your bench. You need twelve concrete blocks to create the bench. Place one concrete block on its side with the opens facing out. Slather the top of the block with the cement mixture and then carefully stack another block on top of it. Place more cement on top of the second block and stack a third one on it the same way as the other block. Take cement and slather it down one side of the stack you created. Carefully place on concrete block directly next to the bottom block on the stack you created. Push the blocks together carefully. Slather the top of the block with cement and then place another block on top of it, making sure that the side is flush with the first stack of blocks you created. Add more cement and stack one more block on top of the stack to finish that side of the bench. Repeat the entire process with another stack of concrete blocks to create a second side of the bench.

Create the Seat

Measure the length and width of the base. Cut a piece of plywood to be the exact size of the base to create the seat. Slather some concrete to the top of each stack of concrete blocks and then press the plywood onto the stacks. This will serve as the seat of the bench.

Once you have finished creating the bench, you can use a long cushion that is designed for outdoor use on patio furniture to make the bench even more comfortable. The small openings in the base of the bench can be used to store some of your gardening supplies so you can easily get to them as needed.
